City closes Emancipation Park for library construction

City officials closed Emancipation Community Park last week as Prince George's County begins demolition of the current library building on Seventh Street adjacent to the park.

In a press release, city officials said the park will remain closed for 15 months. The park and construction area will be fenced off during the work.

The new library, shown in renderings as a 32,000-square foot building with walls of stone and glass and a slanted roof over the grand entrance, will replace the current library structure and extend into the park area. In exchange for using some of the city-owned park, the county will revamp the park with a new playground, basketball court, picnic pavilion, small amphitheater and landscaping, according to city officials.
