Crumbling infrastructure underneath Dorset Road in Laurel has caused city officials concern, leading them to impose a 26,000-pound weight limit on the road until a fix can be made, the city announced last week.
The limit comes in response to the discovery of crumbling drainage structures underneath the road between Old Sandy Spring Road and Woodbine Drive, an approximately 2,000-foot stretch of roadway.
The limit is effective immediately and the city has already installed signage marking the change.
According to a news release, Laurel police will issue violating motorists a citation for first offenses; second offenders will be hit with a ticket.
To remedy the problem, the city is conducting an engineering study to determine repairs. The release said residents will be notified of the repair project, and any potential road closures, as details emerge.
