Laurel officials and representatives from developer Klingbeil Capital Management will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking Aug. 22 for the mixed-use development that will replace the former Police Department off C Street.
Called C Street Flats, developer Klingbeil is planning to build more than 130 apartments, with retail space, a fitness center and a pool.
Because the development is located in the city's Arts and Entertainment District, zoning will permit artists who live there to use their homes as galleries and studios, city officials said.
The developer also plans to create a park on C Street with the winning sculpture of an upcoming contest placed permanently in the park.
Other Klingbeil developments in Laurel include the renovated Oaks complex on Main Street and Oaks North on Post Office Avenue, and the company recently acquired the Emerson apartment complex on Fourth Street at Cherry Lane.
The groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. at the project site, 350 Municipal Square. Light refreshments will be served.
