Laurel Ethics Commission approves campaign forms resubmitted by Council candidates

The city of Laurel's Ethics Commission signed off on the resubmitted campaign forms of the three challengers in the Laurel City Council race at a special meeting Wednesday.

The three challengers in the eight-person City Council race -- John Smith (Ward 1),Thomas Matthews (Ward 2) and Adrian Rousseau (at-large) -- were required to resubmit their financial disclosure forms by the city's Board of Election Supervisors after the Ethics Commission found omissions on their original submissions at a meeting on Sept. 18.

At the September meeting, which the challengers did not attend, the commission signed off on the forms submitted by the five incumbents -- Edward Ricks (Ward 1), Valerie Nicholas (Ward 1), Donna Crary (Ward 2), Fred Smalls (Ward 2) and Michael Leszcz (at-large).
At the meeting this week, which the challengers did attend, the commission unanimously agreed to sign off on the three resubmissions. 
After the approval of the Ethics Commission, the new forms now will be reviewed by the Elections Board at an Oct. 7 meeting, where the board will approve the official ballot for Laurel's Nov. 5 election. 
According to Elections Board Chair John Kish, the original forms lacked basic information such as address, place of employment, income and debts, requiring resubmission.

"We just want the election to run fair and smooth," Kish said after the Board's emergency meeting held Sept. 23. "We don't want any problems later on saying this was rigged. I just want to be fair about the whole thing."
