Now that the new Savage Library has opened, it needs to be a little dressed up. The library has commissioned four Hammond High students to create art works to be permanently displayed. What a great way to celebrate our community within our own library. Please congratulate and thank Erin Allen, Hope Chung, Emily Hwang and Kira Welch.
Forest Ridge is proud to announce that Sarah Renkevens, Jamison Smith and Yufani Mundi all had artwork selected to be displayed in the Horizon Foundation offices. Congratulations on being selected for this honor.
Reservoir High School's Robotics Club competed in their first Tech Challenge against 23 other teams from all over Maryland and Washington, D.C. Watch out for the new team in town because they not only won First Place but they also took the Innovate Award for their design. Their strong finish qualified them for the state competition in February. Way to go, Coach Dave Walley and the team!
Just reminding you that the First Baptist Church of Savage will present a Live Nativity at the Baldwin Commons on Dec. 19 and 20, 6 to 8 p.m. This free event will have music and live animals as they re-create the birth of Jesus. Everyone is welcome.
Do you have some shoes you have outgrown? Do not throw them away. Donate them to Gorman Crossing Elementary School. They are collecting used shoes to give to the less fortunate in the U.S. and abroad. Do not send flip flops or boots, only shoes. You can drop them off at the school or send them in with a student.
Success in Style is offering to wrap your gifts as a way to raise funds to support their program. This nonprofit helps the unemployed with interview skills and gives them proper interview clothing. They run Charity's Closet and Phil's Closet and Cherie Amour in the Savage Mill, which is where the gift wrapping takes place all day on Saturday and Sundays.
They will accept gift cards and unwanted clothing gifts on Dec. 26 for their Skip the Lines party. Also, bins are available at the Mill for your convenience. You can sign up with AmazonSmiles so that when you shop, you donate to Success in Style.
Dec. 21 is the first official day of winter. Make sure you stay up to date with school delays and closings. Schools will be closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 2 for winter break. Classes resume on Jan. 5. Schools will be starting to hold their spelling bees, state testing and midterms in January. The best present any child can get is an education. Make sure they are prepared and make their learning and school your top priority. It is never too late to join the PTA, volunteer and get involved. Everyone benefits from your efforts.
If you do not want to volunteer for your local school, why not check out other volunteer programs through the Volunteer Center of Howard County at http://www.volunteerhoward.org.
Merry Christmas to all who celebrate.
