Atholton High creates T-shirts for hurricane relief [North Laurel/Savage]

Weather and fires have wreaked havoc on our country in recent weeks but people in our area continue to find creative ways to help. Atholton High School’s Leadership Cadre (SLC) has spearheaded a school-wide effort that will help the students, staff and families at Oleson Elementary School in Houston, TX. The community was devastated by Hurricane Harvey and now the families are unable to have their annual fundraiser which typically has raised about $10,000 for the school. That amount, equivalent to less than $10 per student at Atholton, is the goal of the SLC’s fundraiser. T-shirts with the slogan “AHS Supports Houston” were sold for $17 each and profits from the sale will go directly to Oleson Elementary. The SLC at Atholton has also set up a gift registry through Amazon where requested necessities will be sent directly to Oleson Elementary for the purposes of replenishing necessary supplies at the school. To access the online registry go to http://a.co/4fYkklb if you would like to make a generous contribution. We should remember that the families in the Houston area have experienced life changing devastation and will need relief for several years. You will be able to see the power of the generosity of Atholton students at the varsity football game on Friday, Nov. 3, which will also be Senior Night.

You may remember that I visited the Carroll Baldwin Hall in Savage a few weeks ago and learned some of the history of that community landmark which is nearing its 95th year. Mark your calendar for Sunday, Nov. 19, so you can enjoy the acoustic jazz music and painting activity planned for the 95th anniversary celebration. Opening remarks will be at 2:30 p.m. and the painting activity will run from 3 to 5 p.m. The painting will have a winter theme and will be led by local artist Roxana Sinex who has a studio at Savage Mill. You can see her work at http://www.roxanasinexart.com. Her paintings of nature scenes are quite beautiful. Cost for the fundraising painting activity which can hold 25 participants will be $25. Keep your eye on the website www.carrollbaldwinhall.org for more details and to purchase tickets. Information about this important occasion will be added to the website soon.
