Emmanuel UM wants your bikes, sewing machines [North Laurel/Savage]

Emmanuel United Methodist Church will hold a community Recycling Bike and Sewing Machine Collection on Oct. 18, 9 a.m. to noon. Bikes around the World will collect bicycles and portable sewing machines to send to developing nations.

The organization is also collecting money to help offset the cost of shipping. Suggested donations are $10. Goodwill Industries will be there to collect electronics in any condition, except TV's, and also rigid plastic, rechargeable batteries, Styrofoam, packing materials and eyeglasses.

What if I told you that some of our local Girl Scouts have been asked by Santa to help him and his elves this holiday season? Girl Scout Troop 1508 has agreed to collect names of good boys and girls and then Santa will send them a letter directly from the North Pole.

They need help. Anyone who wants to send in a name of a child and a good deed or accomplishment they have done can send it in to http://www.eventbrite.com/e/personalized-letters-from-santa-tickets-13525472051. The cost is $5 for each or $4 if ordering three or more.

Santa will send a personalized letter stamped from the North Pole. Money raised will help the Scouts with costs for their Gold Awards and for their trip to Europe. For questions, contact NLAURELYARDSALE@gmail.com .

The North Laurel Senior Council is hosting free Coffee with the Candidates sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the month of October. Different candidates will be there on different dates from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The last sessions are Oct. 24, 29 and 31. Come and meet candidates and prepare for Election Day.

The 50+ Center has a lot of activities still planned for October. On Oct. 21 there will be four classes for Autumn Colors in Watercolor on Tuesday and Thursdays. Cost is $32.

A History of Sugar and Dessert will be presented free on Oct. 22 at 10 a.m.

The Fall Art Workshop is Cake Decorating on Oct. 24 starting at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $12.

An Italian spaghetti dinner is on Oct. 29 starting at 5 p.m. catered by Three Brothers. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for kids under 6 years of age.

For Halloween, there will be a Costume Bash starting at noon on Oct. 31. Cost is $3 plus a lunch contribution. Register now for these events at 410-313-0380. The center is in the North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road.

Who wants to rake their leaves when the Hammond Soccer Team will do it for you?

Between Nov. 15 and 22, four team members will come to your home and rake your leaves for a donation. Contact Coach Brett Cutler at 410-961-1739 or email bcutler@hcpss.org to book the students. All funds go to support their team program.
