Watch out, world, for Yasmine Allen. This young lady may only be going into 10th grade but she is quite impressive. She has set up an internship to work with a local plastic surgeon.

Yasmine hopes to become a reconstructive facial surgeon. She is active in the local chapter of the NAACP, including past treasurer and now second vice president.

Thanks to the recommendation of her counselor, Linda Packman at Reservoir High School, Yasmine was one of just 10 sophomores to attend the Global Youth Summit — the Future of Medicine at Brandeis University up in Massachusetts while representing the state of Maryland.

This conference was attended by students from around the world. She has to study scientific articles about medicine and then while there she witnessed hip replacement surgery, learned about new medical advancements and then toured several hospitals and medical schools. She even got breakfast at the Boston Aquarium.

Later in the conference, she was part of a group that prepared a presentation on an innovative approach to a medical issue. Her group presented nanotechnology by having a small robot attack an antibiotic resistant bacteria. They were even mentioned by the commencement speaker for their work.

That is not enough though for Yasmine. She is also attending the Youth About Business Summer Business Program this summer at Columbia University in New York because she also thinks it is important to learn about running a business and business practices. She will be learning from CEO's of major corporations as well as working in student groups. She is one very motivated student and makes our area very proud that she is from North Laurel.
