From hearts to arts, activities abound at 50+ Center [North Laurel/Savage]

There is a lot going on in May at the 50+ Center at the North Laurel Community Center.

On May 19, starting at 1 p.m., will be Doctor Talk: Cholesterol and its Relationship to Heart Disease and Stroke.

May 20, at 11 a.m., will be the Master Gardeners Series: Honeybees, Beekeeping and Sustainability. Learn all about honeybees and how our activities can impact their lives, as presented by the Howard County Master Gardeners.

May 21, 10 a.m. till noon, is a workshop on Digital Photos. Learn to make web albums, organize them and how to enhance your photos.

May 22, 9:30 to 11 a.m., is an Art Workshop on Painted Floral Frames. Hand paint a wooden frame using floral design techniques. Cost is $8, with materials provided.

May 26, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will be an Intermediate Zentangle Art Class. Cost is $32, which includes materials.

The League of Gentlemen will host an All-Star basketball game at Patuxent Valley on May 19 at 3 p.m. The League is bringing together some of the most talented players in the community. Congratulations to Forest Ridge Elementary School's fifth graders for the wonderful job they did with the Simulated Congressional Hearings. Each year, fifth graders across the county show judges how much they know about the Constitution. The students really were impressive and managed to teach the judges as well as parents new information about how this country is run.

Congratulations to Hammond High School for winning the important Howard County Sportsmanship Cup for Interscholastic Athletics. This award is presented to only one high school in the county and is voted on by every coach.

Atholton High School PTSA will host the annual Surviving the College Application Process on May 18 at 7 p.m. Parents will meet in the Media Center and students will meet in the Career Center. There will be a short PTSA meeting prior to the program to elect new officers for the next school year.

Hammond Elementary will team be teaming up with Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services by collecting as much peanut butter and jelly as possible. The school is collecting now through the end of school.

The last day for Howard County schools is June 19.
