The Southern Howard County Civic Association has been created and will hold its first meeting on April 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the North Laurel Community Center at 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road in Laurel. Come out and learn what is going on in the county.
Forest Ridge Elementary is teaching students about how they can help out those around the world. They have been skipping drinks, besides water, and asking others to do the same. Then they ask for people to donate the money they would have spent on coffee, soda and other drinks to the Water Project.
This project helps provide water for areas of Africa that do not have a clean water. The money will help build dams and repair wells. It costs about $23 to bring water to one person. As the school submits money to the project, the students will get assigned to a specific project and will get follow the project through photos, GPS and field reports.
Howard County General Hospital is starting a We Walk for Wellness every Saturday starting March 28 and running till Oct. 31. It will be held at the North Laurel Community Center. Those interested should be in the parking lot behind the center by 8:45 a.m. The walk will be 9-10 am. The program will have a warm up, guided group walk and cool down, light aerobic activities, as well as having information about exercise and nutrition. Call 410-740-7601 for more information.

Hammond High Music Boosters will hold a Designer Purse Bingo on April 18 at the Laurel Elks Lodge at 8261 Brock Bridge Road. Cost is $20 in advance and $25 at the door for 20 games. Doors open at 6 p.m. A special 10 extra raffle tickets will be offered to anyone making reservations by March 29.
