Laurel Woods Elementary named Model School [North Laurel/Savage]

Laurel Woods Elementary School has been chosen to be one of the Elementary School Model Schools in the county. This program was started this year in six schools and has been so successful that they are expanding it for the next school year.

The school will offer full day pre-kindergarten as well as Spanish instruction daily. By fifth grade students should be at a immediate level of proficiency in Spanish. It has been found that students learn a second language easier at a young age.

They will also design the class day with two instruction blocks. One will be English and social studies and the other math, science and health. They will also continue with fine arts, world language, physical education, music, media and technology. Laurel Woods will be the first of the local area schools to switch to this new program.

Hammond Elementary wants to take care of the cold. They have a mitten tree to collect mittens and gloves to be donated to the Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services. They also have bird feeders at the school to make sure all our little friends have food.
