Mothers and sons invited to Valentine's Dance [North Laurel/Savage]

Here's an interesting spin on Valentine's Day. There will be a Mother and Son Valentine's Dance on Feb. 7 at the North Laurel Community Center.

The evening will include refreshments, a DJ, games, crafts and even a souvenir photo and ice cream sundae bar. Tickets include mom or other special adult and son, ages 3 to 12.

It is that time of year again when you have to think taxes. Do you make less than $53,000 a year? If so, you can get your taxes prepared for free at the Multi-Service Center. Atholton High School is looking for businesses that have work for their special education students, who are working on office skills. They have completed mailings, labeled, collated, folded and filed, and put together goodie bags or packets, counted out tickets or coins, shredded documents and made gift wrap, but can do other work as well. I missed some information on Boy Scout Troop 602. There were five boys who received their Eagle Scout award but I only mentioned four. Jake Sillyman, a freshman at the University of South Carolina installed a footpath at the Howard County Conservancy.

Also, I wanted to mention that Zach Yost, one of the Eagle Scouts is attending the University of Chicago. Sorry, guys, I did not mean to skip you.

Laurel Woods Elementary School is looking for hats and gloves to be donated to those who do not have them. Just drop them off at the school's office.

Congratulations to the Hammond High Ursa Major Robotics Ream for winning a $5,000 grant from the United Therapeutics Corp.

The 50+ Center has booked some wonderful activities for the month of February. They will host Talkin' Broadway Series on Feb. 9. It will be on Tin Pan Alley 1927 to 1939, How the American Songbook was integrated into Broadway. This will start at 1 p.m.

Motown Memories will be on Feb. 13 starting at 11 a.m. Enjoy the sound of Motown before a Valentine's Day lunch. Cost is $3 plus a donation for lunch.

Feb. 18 will be Travel Talk with Rick: Fjords of the World starting at 11 a.m.

A computer and Device Workshop still be held on Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. at the 50+ Center. This program is free.

Zentangle was such a hit that Intermediate Zentangle will be held for those who took the beginning class on Tuesdays start Feb. 24 at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $32 for materials for four classes.

The center will end the month with a Black History Month Celebration on Feb. 27 starting at 11 a.m. Cost is $3 plus a lunch donation. There will be a performance by Julie Hall.
