HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Howard County Terps, the county’s oldest youth football and cheerleading program, elected Vaughn Stamper as its new president on Jan. 22. Stamper, 28, is the youngest president in the organization’s history.
“Being closer in age to many of our student-athletes, Vaughn has the ear and hearts of many of our student-athletes and parents,” said fellow Howard County Terps coach Tony Coffield. “On any given day, he’s racing players in football sprint drills or coaching our annual Moms’ flag football game.”
Stamper, a Howard County native, graduated from Wilde Lake High School in 2008 and played football for legendary Wildecats coach Doug DuVall, who Vaughn still leans on for support and encouragement. He then attended Bowie State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 2013, before returning to the Owen Brown community in Columbia and serving as a mentor and advocate for youth athletes around the area.
Stamper first got involved with the Howard County Terps as an assistant coach in 2016, and last season he led the 13-and-under team to the Division II playoffs. Next fall, he plans to coach the 13U Division I team in addition to serving as the organization’s president.
“If you are genuinely interested and involved in the youth in the community and encourage them to do well, they are aware and tend to want to share and display their accomplishments off the field as well as on the football field.” Stamper said.
