Glenelg wrestling remains unbeaten with wins over Atholton, Oakland Mills

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — You can’t win a county championship in mid-December, but you certainly can lose one.

For defending county and regional champion Glenelg, it had to find a way to beat the two teams — Atholton and Oakland Mills — that finished tied for second at last year’s Howard County tournament on Tuesday without three expected starters and two state-place winners.

Gladiators coach Matt Bichner admitted to being a little nervous heading into the tri-meet at less than full strength, but their depth proved to be enough, as they knocked off the Raiders, 38-33, and the Scorpions, 40-26, to improve to 3-0 in county and overall.

Mulbah Kamara won by fall at 182 pounds in the final bout to lift Oakland Mills to a 36-33 win over Atholton to finish the day 1-1.

“I knew it was going to be close,” Bichner said. “Some of the guys that lost in certain matches I wasn’t expecting but some other guys stepped up. I knew we could hang in there, it just came down to bonus points and winning some close matches.”

Glenelg’s biggest test of the night came against upstart Atholton. Both teams won seven matches but the difference, as is the case between top-notch teams, came down to which team had more pins. The Gladiators picked up five falls and a technical fall, compared to three falls and forfeit for the Raiders.

The Gladiators overcame a 23-12 deficit and won seven of the final eight matches to beat the Mustangs on Wednesday night.

No pin was bigger than Ian Gwin’s at 138 pounds. Glenelg was down, 27-20, entering the bout and Gwin trailed Aiden Healey by five points midway through the second period when Healey locked up a cradle. Gwin, however, scooped the head and picked up the fall in 2 minutes, 48 seconds with a reverse cradle.

“That was huge,” Bichner said. “We just needed a win there to keep it going because we knew we had a couple solid guys coming up that would be tough. We were a little nervous but Ian was able to pull it out. We wish he didn’t give up points to get points, but sometimes it works out like that.”

Gwin’s victory cut the deficit to one, and although Atholton’s Stephen Frazier earned a pin to extend the lead back to eight, Glenelg closed the match with two straight falls by Drew Sotka (152 pounds) and Jacob Jones (160).

Glenelg followed the win over Atholton (1-2 Howard County, 1-2 overall) with a victory over Oakland Mills (2-1, 3-5), which has now lost to the Gladiators three years in a row for its only defeats in county play in that span.

The Scorpions led, 12-6, but forfeited at 106, 113 and 120 pounds to give the Gladiators a 24-12 edge, which ballooned to 28-12 after Kevin Hansberger won an 11-0 major decision at 126 pounds.

Oakland Mills cut the deficit to two after Kyle Farace (132) and Jonal Semprit (145) won via technical fall and Ben Goldfein (138) picked up a 16-7 major decision, but Glenelg pulled away with victories by Drew Sotka (152), Jones (160) and Max Sotka (170).

“It just looked like an early season match,” Bichner said. “Obviously Atholton’s guys were still a little sloppy, Oakland Mills was missing a few guys down low. Everybody is still coming into form, so it’s kind of a shame to have these meaningful matches this early in the season, but that’s just how the schedule worked out. I’m just glad we were able to persevere through and get it done.”

The Scorpions, who went 1-4 at the Scorpion Duals over the weekend, again forfeited the three lower weights against Atholton to fall into a 24-7 hole. An overtime decision by Jalen Cornelius (126) won an overtime decision to spark their comeback, as Kyle Farace (132, technical fall), Ben Goldfein (138, pin) and Jonald Semprit (145, decision) followed with victories to tie the match at 24.

Frazier (152) and Oakland Mills’ Dylan Watt (160) traded pins to keep the score tied at 30 before Sean Billups (170) beat Anthony Morales, 5-0, to make it 33-30 in favor of the Raiders.

Kamara picked up the fall in 2:34 to give Oakland Mills the team victory.

“It’s never a bad thing for a kid to be tested in a pressure situation at any time of the year,” Scorpions coach Brad Howell said of Kamara. “It’s a good learning opportunity for him ... Mulbah was prepared.

“We knew were going to see some good matches. Atholton is a quality team, they were missing some quality kids, we are missing some quality kids, Glenelg is a tough squad who was missing some quality kids. I think all these teams are going to be better at the end of the year.”

In defeat, Atholton looked every bit like a county championship contender. Billups, a two-time county tournament finalist, started the evening with a statement win at 170 pounds over Glenelg returning state finalist Max Sotka in a rematch of last year’s county final.

After a scoreless first period and a 2-2 tie after two, Billups took a 5-2 lead with an early escape and a double-leg takedown with about a minute left. Sotka responded with an escape in the waning seconds and a takedown to beat the third-period buzzer to tie the match at 5.

Sotka took a 6-5 advantage with an escape in the second overtime period but Billups took control with a takedown and two near-fall points and held on to win, 10-8, in three overtimes.

“It was very important. Everything that I’ve been doing to lead to this moment has led to my victory in that match,” Billups said. “It showed off a lot of effort and a lot of technique that I’ve put in in the wrestling room and at practice.”

Atholton junior Drew Pruett, a county and regional finalist last season at 106 pounds, also had a big individual victory. He shut out last year’s 113-pound county champion, Logan Gwin, 3-0 with an escape and a takedown in the third period.
