Glenelg continued its undefeated mark Friday night against Wilde Lake, needing a little bit of luck – and a golden-goal by sophomore forward Emily Nalls – to clinch the victory.
"I mean honestly, a little luck is involved [and] we're just finding a way. They have a good heart," said Gladiators coach Andrew Shearer after the, 2-1, overtime win. "That was really fun. It was so evenly matched it was unreal. It was just a matter of who was going to put the ball in the back of the net first, really. That's what it boiled down to in my opinion, so we luckily got it with a little luck involved – I'll take it."
After 80 minutes tied at one, Glenelg and the visiting Wildecats went in to a 10-minute golden-goal overtime. It was evenly matched with neither team getting a shot on net within the first three minutes of extra time, until Gladiators junior Bethany Stewart played a through ball toward Nalls, who took a touch around her defender and launched a shot over the top of Wilde Lake keeper Jenna Hutchison. The shot hit the bottom half of the crossbar and deflected downward with Wildecats defender Anna DiBattista clearing it away. Nalls, Shearer and the rest of the crowd at Glenelg High School were not sure whether the ball crossed the goal line, but the head referee signaled game-over, with Nalls tallying the game winner.
"I didn't think it went in," Shearer said. "I thought this is our luck. We'll just continue to play overtime. But like I said, we've had some luck and every now and again you need it. I'm proud of the girls. It's more than just the luck. We'll take a little bit, but it's the effort of these girls. It's applying the things that we've been doing in training and to here. They're buying in and they're passionate about it, so it's good stuff."
The Gladiators nearly took the lead with five minutes left before halftime, as Stewart found herself open in the middle of the box, took a touch and almost put it over the head of Hutchison, but the sophomore goalkeeper made an excellent save on the shot, punching the attempt out of play.
