The River Hill girls soccer program has had a rich history of winning, with Carly Wetzel entering the program at its pinnacle — helping her team win its third consecutive state championship as a freshman in 2014. However, last season, River Hill dipped a bit, having an up-and-down year that ended with a second-round exit in the 2A playoffs. Wetzel, now a junior captain, and the rest of the Hawks are ready to bounce back from a disappointing 2015 and once again establish themselves as one of the best in not only the county, but the state.
Howard County girls soccer beat reporter Monica D'Ippolito sat down with Wetzel and talked about what it was like taking on captain duties in her third season with the team, her expectations this season and her future in the sport.
What has it been like taking on a leadership role this fall?
The past two years we've had really good examples set for us by our captains. I think we kind of — the three of us [Megan Chun and Victoria Tran] — kind of realized that coming in to this year we would have to step up and take that role, because we didn't have any of the class of 2017 on our team. I think last year kind of prepared us for it a little bit, having two of our seniors [Jess Hopkins and Becca Higgins] out with their ACL's and they were both our captains, so it kind of prepped us by having to be leaders on the field. So I think we came into this year with more of an idea of what we need to do and how to lead, because of those examples and the experience we had from last year. And, honestly, we were really excited to do it. We were up to this challenge to lead this team. We enjoy it a lot. The girls we get to work with are great and they make it fun and working with coach [Brian] Song is always great too.
