River Hill handled Reservoir, 4-0, at home on Wednesday to capture their first county championship since 2014. The Hawks finish 8-1-2 in county play and 11-1-2 overall to finish a full game ahead of Mt. Hebron, which won the league in 2015 and 2016.

Evan Doten led the way with two goals.

“It feels great,” said River Hill coach Matt Shagogue. “It was certainly one of our goals this year coming in and it came down to clearly the last day. It was one of those situations where if we won we didn’t have to worry about anything else. That was a bit of our goal, take care of our own business and we don’t have to worry about what this team’s doing, what this team’s doing.”

The Hawks lost at Atholton, 1-0, on Oct. 13 to suffer its first defeat of the season but responded with back-to-back four-goal performances against Long Reach and Reservoir to cap the regular season and win the county title.

“You respond one of two ways: You either let it define who you are and you give up or you persevere,” Shagogue said. “My message to the kids was one game doesn’t define you.”
