Mt. Hebron boys, Marriotts Ridge girls earn first at annual Scorpion Crawl cross country meet

Oakland Mills senior Joey Navarro nearly came away with his fifth first-place finish of the season Monday at the annual Scorpion Crawl cross country meet. But in a tight finish, it was Albert Einstein's Simeon Mussie who edged out Navarro – by half a second – on his home course to take first place.Despite the second-place standing, Navarro had an incredible race, running the third fastest time on the course by a Scorpion.After Mussie (16:34.17) and Navarro (16:34.61), Mt. Hebron duo Jacob Edmondson (16:45.54) and Sahil Saresai (16:47.83) followed closely for two and a half miles before Mussie and Navarro separated from the pack. However, Edmondson and Saresai finished third and fourth, respectively, which helped the Vikings clinch first-place on the boy's side.Teammates Kevin Johnson (17:30. 94) Michael Schlining (17:36.19), Timothy Packard (17:40.76) and Jacob Ververs (17:42.77) weren't too far behind, crossing 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th, respectively, for Mt. Hebron.The Vikings looked impressive on the day, ultimately finishing with 45 points. Oakland Mills (57 points), Archbishop Curley (76 points), Albert Einstein (81 points) and Marriotts Ridge (142 points) rounded out the top-five team scores.Ricky Farrell (18:09.02), Steven Barr (18:15.57), Benjamin Yodzis (19:53.58) and Sam Levine (20:16.04) were the top finishers for their respective teams. Farrell finished 22nd overall for Marriotts Ridge, Barr 23rd for Chapelgate, Yodzis 39th for Hammond and Levine 40th for Long Reach.In the girls varsity race, the Mustangs took home the first-place prize, as junior Molly Bingham led the way, placing second overall with a time of 20 minutes, 33.3 seconds.The Mustangs put seven athletes in the top-20, including four in the top-10, with Bingham, Tess Dandridge, Hannah Frederick and Kealy Faughnan.Oakdale's Emily Baba cruised to a first-place finish, crossing in 19 minutes, 53.44 seconds.Oakland Mills junior Grace Chaverini (20:48.19) followed Bingham to claim third, while the Bears Sami Hardesty (20:51.54), and Dandridge (20:53.51) rounded out the top-five.Mt. Hebron's Emily Beyer ran a good race and led the pack most of the way, but unfortunately missed the last hill of the zig-zag hills at the beginning of the race, which led to a disqualification. The junior has had a terrific season for the Vikings, placing in the top-11 in each of the meets she has ran in thus far this year.Golden Bears senior Emma Denlinger also had a solid meet, finishing in the top-10 with a time of 21 minutes, 23.06 seconds.Junior Kara Davis led the Yellowjackets with a 12th place standing, crossing in 21 minutes, 24.99 seconds, while Chemutai Nganga (21:36.01) and Lauren Siedlecki (21:41.88) led the Vikings, finishing 13th and 14th overall, respectively.The Mustangs finished five points better than second-place Oakdale (37 points). Mt. Hebron (78 points), Albert Einstein (104) and Oakland Mills (116 points) rounded out the top-five.
