After a physical 80 minutes, River Hill held on to a 1-0 decision over host Mt. Hebron Thursday and clinched its first county win of the season.

"It feels really great," said Hawks captain Vic Tran. "Our tie against Glenelg was pretty disappointing. I think Glenelg showed us a lot of chances where we should have finished, where I think today – we still need to finish more chances – but we played a little bit defensively better, but there's still a ton of work to do. But first county win is always great."

After a 2-2 tie against the Gladiators on Tuesday, where River Hill out-shot the opposition 20-3 in the game, the Hawks emphasized finishing coming into their matchup against the Vikings.

Tran took the message to heart and pushed her team ahead, 1-0, with about 24 minutes remaining in the first half. Tran found some space inside Mt. Hebron's box and ripped her shot top shelf for the goal.

"I think it was really important," Tran said. "I think it boosted moral. It definitely gave us more confidence throughout the game and helped us play a little bit more relaxed, but again we still need to finish chances."

"Not bad," added Hawks coach Brian Song of the goal. "She is, Megan [Chun] and Brigette [Wang] are probably my three best finishers. But lots of times Vic doesn't have the opportunity because she's playing midfield and not forward, so when I push her up to forward she gets her chance. I mean she's finishing them."

River Hill controlled the first half of play, getting numerous chances on net. But the Vikings defense, backed by senior goalie Megan Pallozzi, withstood the pressure and helped maintain the 1-0 deficit at the half.

"I congratulated our defense at the end of the night because we got crushed over and over again and they only let one goal in," said Mt. Hebron coach Tim Deppen. "So between our back four and Pallozzi that says a great deal about persevering and resilience. They got crushed over and over again and did a real good job handling it… so really proud of our defense and Pallozzi tonight."

The Hawks could have had a three goal lead at the break with two shots skimming off the post and out-shooting the Vikings 7-1 in the first 40 minutes.
