River Hill boys soccer beats Wilde Lake 2-0 in 2A South region quarterfinals

Top-seeded River Hill got its postseason started with a shutout Tuesday evening.

The Hawks got goals from Cory Northrup in the first half and Evan Doten in the second, providing enough cushion for the team’s defense to do the rest en route to a 2-0 shutout of visiting Wilde Lake in the 2A South region quarterfinals.

“I was pleased overall, but the second half for sure. I thought we loosened up once we got our first goal and then it turned into a different game,” River Hill coach Matt Shagogue said. “Having not played for 13 days, I think there was a little rust and it’s playoffs … you never really know what you are going to get. So I’m definitely happy we get to keep going.”

With the win, River Hill (12-1-2) advances into a region semifinal match-up on Friday at 7 p.m. against Oakland Mills, which defeated Marriotts Ridge 3-1 in its region quarterfinal game.

While the final score was in favor of the Hawks, the opening 15 minutes were actually all Wilde Lake (7-7-2). The Wildecats dominated possession and got off three shots on the River Hill net to go along with several other chances that went just wide. On the other end, the Hawks were unable to get off a single attempt in those initial stages of the first half.

“We know that we’re an emotional team and not being able to get that one early, I think it changed things. And that’s a good River Hill team, so the more you let a team like that hang around the more confident they are going to get,” Wilde Lake coach Trevor Shea said.

As the game progressed, River Hill did indeed settle in and began winning more possession in the midfield. That allowed the team to get the ball out wide and begin creating opportunities on the offensive end.

Finally, with 15:56 left before halftime, the Hawks found the scoreboard when Justin Harris crossed a ball from the left side that Northrup was able to redirect into the back of the net.

“[Coming in] everybody was a little nervous, just excited, and [Wilde Lake] did have their chances — luckily they didn’t finish them. And then that first chance we got, or maybe it was the second one, we finished and that just kind of calmed everyone down and allowed us to get into our groove,” Northrup said.

The score stayed 1-0 going into the half and through the early stages after intermission. Then, with 28:10 left in regulation, Doten increased the lead to two on a hard one-touch shot off a rebound near the top of the box.

Wilde Lake was unable to muster a single shot during the second half as the Hawks closed out the victory.

Looking ahead to the match-up against the Scorpions, Shagogue knows that another tough test is on tap. During the regular season, the two teams tied 2-2.

“We’ve got to be able to defend, because we know what’s coming. I don’t think these guys need any reminders,” Shagoguge said.
