Howard and Reservoir girls soccer battle through 100 minutes to a, 1-1, tie

Highlights from the Reservoir versus Howard girls soccer game on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Reservoir High School. The Gators and Lions battled through double overtime to a, 1-1, draw. (Monica D'Ippolito/BSMG).

It was a long week for Howard, playing in its third contest in four days Saturday at Reservoir. And although their legs were tired, the Lions defense – backed by sophomore keeper Mya McConnell – withstood the pressure from the Gators offense, and after 100 minutes ended the day with the 1-1 tie.

"I am so proud of my team right now," said Howard coach Bali Boule. "Not only did we just play a very good team for 100 minutes, but that will be the third game that we've played in [four] days. So totally satisfied with the result. I feel like it's very appropriate for the game, obviously we would have loved to win but I think our defense and our whole entire team did a great job of holding them off. They just left their hearts on the field today – and it showed."

Reservoir controlled most of the play – especially in the first half, getting multiple opportunities and out-shooting the Lions, 7-2 within the first 40 minutes.

Although Howard didn't have that many chances on goal, it made the most of its opportunities. The Lions first shot on net came with 11 minutes remaining before halftime, as Caroline Lewis broke free for a semi-breakaway down the far sideline. The junior put a solid strike on net, but Gators goalkeeper Janie Romer positioned herself perfectly to make the diving save.

"Our chances were rare today, so we needed a little bit more shots on goal," Boule said. "We didn't have a ton of shots today, but when we did get opportunities it was from hustle plays. It was from Krista [Whelan] pushing up or from our outside [midfielders] pushing up – somebody just going above and beyond and making something happen. So of course I would have loved for one of them to go in, but like I said, we are exhausted. We've had a tough week and so when we pushed anybody up, I was just happy that we had the legs to push up at this point."
