Oakland Mills (4-7 county, 7-15 overall – No. 4 seed Section II 2A West Region)

Best Case: In one of the more remarkable stories in recent region boys basketball tournament history, the Scorpions do something they failed to do all season — win more than two games in a row — and accomplish what last year’s county-championship team failed to do — win a region title. All the pieces align, with Jordan Hopkins and Daeshawn Eaton leading the backcourt and Brian Wheelock (who scored 19 points in the regular season finale against Marriotts Ridge) stepping up on the interior. Things start with a win over Marriotts Ridge and then continue with the big upset over top-seeded Century, which plays an eerily similar style to the River Hill team that the Scorpions nearly beat late in the year. Suddenly a confident group, the road opens up for Oakland Mills to play its best basketball of the season in a no pressure situation. The run comes to an end against a Prince George’s County team in the state semifinals but not before a region championship banner is up on the wall.
