Boys, girls lacrosse state playoff brackets released

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — The MPSSAA released the boys and girls lacrosse playoff brackets on May 7, and three boys and two girls teams earned No. 1 seeds in their respective sections.

In the boys state championship brackets, county champions Glenelg (13-1 overall) is the top seed in Section I of the 2A South region, while Centennial (9-5) has the top spot in Section I of the 3A East region and Howard (13-1) is the No. 1 seed in Section I of the 4A North region.

The Gladiators, who reached the 3A/2A state championship game last spring, have a first-round bye and will face the winner of No. 4 River Hill (7-7) and No. 5 Wilde Lake (4-7), which play on May 9, in the second round on May 11. Marriotts Ridge (12-2) is the No. 2 seed and will face either No. 3 Oakland Mills (9-5) or No. 6 Hammond (4-8). The top seed in Section II is La Plata.

The Eagles also have a bye and will face the winner of No. 4 Long Reach (3-8) or No. 5 Reservoir (2-10), while No. 2 seed Atholton (5-7) will play No. 3 Mt. Hebron (5-9) on May 11. The No. 1 seed in Section II of the 3A East region is J.M. Bennett.

The Lions have a first-round bye and will play either No. 4 Catonsville or No. 5 Perry Hall on May 11. Mervo is the No. 2 seed and Dulaney is the No. 3. Urbana is the top-seeded team in Section II of the 4A North region.

This is also the first year for both girls and boys lacrosse that there will be four state championships — one for each classification.

The Gladiators remained undefeated in county play with a 10-7 win at Centennial to earn at least a share of the county title.

Glenelg defeated River Hill on May 4 to secure its second straight league championship.

On the girls' side, Glenelg (12-2) earned the top seed in Section I of 2A South. The Gladiators have won the last two 3A/2A state championships and again look like a state title contender, finishing the regular season undefeated in county play for the second straight year. Marriotts Ridge (12-2) is the No. 2 seed in the region and lost to Glenelg, 15-10, in mid-April. The Mustangs have also fallen to the Gladiators in each of the past two postseasons. Both teams earned first-round byes.

In Section I of 3A East, Mt. Hebron (9-5) is the top seed after winning seven of its first eight games this season. The Vikings, along with No. 2 seed Long Reach (4-8) and No. 3 seed Centennial (3-9), automatically advanced to the sectional semifinals.

Howard, which defeated Mt. Hebron in overtime in its regular season finale, is the No. 4 seed in Section I of 4A North and will play Perry Hall in the sectional quarterfinals on May 9.
