South Carroll collected its second win over a Howard County opponent Monday night, scoring two early goals to propel the, 3-2, victory over visiting Long Reach.
"I grew up in Howard County, I know the quality of soccer down there. That county is top to bottom, a tough, tough league, but that's why we play those teams," said Cavaliers coach Andrew Isacco, whose club also defeated Atholton, while losing to Centennial in the Catonsville Tournament earlier this month. "We want to play tough, and good, and well-coached teams. So I'll take it, I'm happy about it and I think we still got another one. We play Glenelg and I'm always looking forward to that, but I'll take being 2-1 against the quality of competition that we played."
Alyssa Chesney put South Carroll on the board about 10 minutes after the opening whistle. Off a throw-in on the Lightning's defensive third of the field, Chesney volleyed the ball off of one bounce and sailed her shot over the head of Long Reach keeper Riley Holmes for the score.
The Cavaliers scored in similar fashion about 13 minutes later, as Tori Franklin struck a high arcing blast about 35 yards out, clearing the head of Holmes and neatly falling in to the far corner for the goal.
"You always want to try and get the first goal and the second goal because then it puts the other team back on their heels, but I knew going into the second half they were going to come at us pretty hard," Isacco said. "I know coach Sam [Haddad] he's a good coach and I know how he coaches. I knew we hadn't seen their best shot and they took it to us in the second half for parts of it. It turned out those goals were really important, so I was really happy, especially with the effort and the composure of our team."
