A round-up of the varsity action around Howard County on Friday, Sept. 1:
Marriotts Ridge 1, South Carroll 0
On opening day, Marriotts Ridge went on the road and picked up a tight shutout victory thanks to a second-half goal from Sarah Bengermino.
After a scoreless first half, Mustangs' coach Stacie Gado said she was pleased with how her team adjusted to the field conditions of not playing on their more familiar turf or bermuda grass. Finally, with 27:40 remaining in the second half, Bengermino broke through off a feed from teammate Eloise Clevenger.
That one goal turned out to be enough for the win, as the Marriotts Ridge defense held strong the rest of the way. Goalie Katie Garman made four saves for the Mustangs, while South Carroll's Rachel Hagler made three saves.

Marriotts Ridge 2, Chesapeake 1
After falling behind, the Mustangs rallied thanks to goals from Sahil Raina and Brady Trenchard in the team's season opener. Raina and Ben Huntley each provided assists, while goalie Mark Antico made 10 saves for Marriotts Ridge.
South Carroll 3, Centennial 0
In the opening round of their tournament at Chesapeake, the Cavaliers got goals from Alex Seidel, Stephen White, and Nick Simoncini on the way to the shutout victory over the Eagles. Seidel and Carter Chesney added assists. Brayden Fugini made 15 saves for South Carroll as well.
