Howard County football: Week 6 in review

Catch up on all the Howard County football action you may have missed this weekend

Here's a recap of all the Howard County football action from Oct. 7 and 8:

Long Reach improved to 6-0 with a 20-10 win at River Hill (3-3) on Oct. 7.

Lightning quarterback Tyler Raines completed 13-of-24 passes for 136 yards and a 6-yard touchdown to Jalen Hall in the first quarter, and he also ran for a 5-yard score in the second. Dane Lynch Jr. intercepted two passes and returned the first play of the second half 18 yards for a score.

Quarterback Luke Champion, who ran for 74 yards and a touchdown and threw for 126 yards on 14 completions, led the Hawks, while receivers Daniel Kelly and Brendan McKenna each had six receptions. Cooper McGeehan also kicked a 26-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Anthony Jenkins and Stanley Kirkland combined for 27 carries for 224 yards and three touchdowns to help Wilde Lake (4-2) shutout Hammond (0-6), 30-0, to win its fourth straight game. TJ Lyles also had a score and 70 yards on 11 carries, and the defense got three fumble recoveries, an interception from Darius Nicholas and a safety late in the game.

Howard (6-0) scored five touchdowns in the first half to knock off Centennial (1-5), 35-0, on Oct. 7. Running back Devin Dawkins returned the opening kick off 92 yards for a score and had two more rushing touchdowns and 126 yards on 12 carries. DJ Howard added a 47-yard touchdown run and quarterback Robby Porter threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Perez in the second quarter.

Quarterback Mason Pung completed 6-of-12 passes for 95 yards and three touchdowns – two to Marcus Lunsford – to lead Marriotts Ridge (3-3) to a 21-0 win at Oakland Mills (2-4). Lewy Anania added a 7-yard receiving touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Mustangs running back Eli Turner ran for 142 yards on 19 attempts.

Defensively, Shawn Horn, Kendall Jackson and Justin Hooper combined for 26 tackles, while Abeku Abercrombie had two sacks and a forced fumble to help Marriotts Ridge get its second shutout of the year.

A week after scoring 51 points against Hammond, Atholton (4-2) spoiled Mt. Hebron’s (2-4) homecoming game and won 45-20.

Six different players carried the ball at least twice for the Raiders, who finished with 192 yards rushing, while the defense and special teams combined for four touchdowns. Habib Bundu had touchdowns on a 93-yard interception return to go with a punt return, John Heriot added kick return for a score, and Reed Bunyard (fumble return) and Jasen Parkins (interception return) also found the end zone.

Kicker Ben Lovera added a 42-yard field goal and made all six extra point attempts, and Jacob Waterworth caught a 23-yard touchdown from quarterback Dominic Totaro.

On Oct. 8, Glenelg (5-1) held off Reservoir (0-6), 17-13, in a 3A East regional championship game rematch. Wande Owens ran for 212 yards and two scores on 41 carries, while Hunter Forsyth added a field goal for the Gladiators.

Offensive Player of the Week*: Wande Owens, Glenelg.

Owens ran for 212 yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries to help Glenelg beat Reservoir on Oct. 8. Owens was responsible for more than 80 percent of the Gladiators’ offense in the rematch of last year’s 3A East regional championship game.

Also considered: Mason Pung, Marriotts Ridge; Devin Dawkins, Howard.

Defensive Player of the Week*: Dane Lynch, Jr., Long Reach.

Lynch Jr. intercepted two passes and netted 82 return yards in Long Reach’s 20-10 win at River Hill Oct. 7. His first interception came on the first play of the second half and was returned a score that put the Lightning up 20-3, and the second came inside the red zone with less than 2 minutes remaining.
