Howard County football: Week 5 in review

Here's a round up of all the Howard County football action from Friday, Sept. 30:

Howard (5-0) scored on its first two possessions on touchdown runs by Devin Dawkins and cruised to a 40-6 home win over Oakland Mills (2-3).

Elsewhere in the county, Glenelg (4-1) rolled over Mt. Hebron (2-3), 42-12, behind five rushing touchdowns from sophomore running back Wande Owens. He scored the Gladiators' first five touchdowns on runs of 3, 1, 14, 3 and 65 yards, all of which came in the first three quarters, and finished with 212 yards on 22 carries.

Defensively, senior linebacker Connor Stanley had a huge day for Glenelg. He scored on a 56-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.

Wilde Lake (3-2) won its third straight game by defeating Reservoir (0-5), 10-6.

The Wildecats scored all 10 of their points in the second quarter on a 22-yard run by Stanley Kirkland (8 carries, 40 yards) and a 30-yard field goal by Jason MacMillan. TJ Lyles led the team in rushing with 64 yards on seven rushes.

The Gators were held to 103 yards of total offense. Mason Baker caught an 8-yard pass from quarterback Jordan Green for their only score in the third.

In Marriottsville, River Hill (3-2) went on the road to beat Marriotts Ridge (2-3), 14-7.

Hawks quarterback Luke Champion scored both of his team's touchdowns. The first came on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and his second was an 8-yard pass to Brendan McKenna in the second quarter. Champion finished 22-for-27 with 166 yards passing, and wide receiver Daniel Kelly continued his strong season with six receptions for 78 yards.

The River Hill defense, meanwhile, held the Mustangs to 110 yards of total offense. Lewy Anania scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter for Marriotts Ridge.

Atholton (3-2) scored 29 points in the second quarter en route to a commanding 51-6 win over Hammond (0-5).

Raiders running back Eric Love finished with 121 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 17 carries, while John Heriot and Treyvon Matthews also found the end zone on the ground. Quarterback Dominic Totaro and Jacob Waterworth each threw a touchdown pass with Habib Bundu and Kade Singleton on the receiving end. Atholton finished with 280 yards rushing.

Defensively, the Raiders had five sacks and three interceptions, including one by Jasen Parkins that was returned for a touchdown.

Long Reach (5-0) remained undefeated by scoring 26 unanswered points in a 26-8 win against Centennial (1-4).

The Eagles scored first on a 52-yard pass from Matt Shoenberger to Eli White before the Lightning rallied with 26 second-half points.

Jalen Hall (3 receptions, 72 yards) caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Raines, and running back KaDarrian Booker (15 carries, 100 yards) gave Long Reach the lead for good with a 31-yard touchdown run. Greg Benton Jr. extended the cushion to 18-8 with a 1-yard run, and Booker added a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth-quarter. The Lightning defense caused four turnovers, which included two interceptions from Luis Gooden Jr.

Offensive Player of the Week*: Devin Dawkins, Howard.

The Lions sophomore running back scored on Howard's first two drives and needed just six carries to gain 95 yards in the first quarter. He finished with 190 yards and three touchdowns in the first half against Oakland Mills, and finished with 267 yards on 28 carries,

Also considered: Eric Love, Atholton; Wande Owens, Glenelg; Luke Champion, River Hill.

Defensive Player of the Week*: Connor Stanley Glenelg.

The Gladiators' senior linebacker finished with 11 total tackles, three forced fumbles and an interception that he returned 56 yards for a touchdown in Glenelg's 42-12 win against Mt. Hebron.

Also considered: Muddy McHemba, Howard; Jasen Parkins, Atholton.
