The seeds for the 2016 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association region tournament were released on Tuesday morning, with Howard County's boys and girls teams split up between the 4A North, 3A East and 2A West regions.
On the boys side, Oakland Mills got the top seed in Section II of 2A West after finishing the regular season 20-2 overall and winning the Howard County title. In 3A East, Centennial (15-7) has the top seed in Section I and Hammond (18-3) has the second seed — behind Stephen Decatur — in Section II. Howard (12-10) is the lone team in 4A North and has earned a three-seed in Section II.
For the girls, Howard (20-2 overall) has the second seed — behind Western — in Section II of the 4A North region on the heels of wrapping up sole possession of this year's county championship. In 3A East, Glenelg (18-4) is the top seed in Section I and Atholton (16-4) is the second seed — behind Stephen Decatur — in Section II. Oakland Mills (6-15) is the county's top team in terms of seeding in 2A West, earning a fifth-seed in Section II.
The opening round of the playoffs is scheduled to tip off on Friday night, with the better seed serving as the home team. Some of the top teams have received first-round byes.
On Friday, for the schools that have home games for both their boys and girls teams, there is the potential for double headers.
The state semifinals for the boys are scheduled for March 10 (3A and 4A) and March 11 (1A and 2A) at the Xfinity Center on the campus of the University of Maryland. The state finals will follow on March 12.
