The 16U Western Howard County Renegades Red won the 2017 Joppatowne Baseball 18U Mid-Summer Classic baseball tournament on July 15 and 16. The Renegades Red won the tournament championship in extra innings over Hughesville Hustle, 7-6, after Samir Katta's walk off brought home Jake Ewart. Members of the team include Nick Croston, Lucas Balda, TJ DelMonte, Nic Roschella, Cole Sterry, Ryan Cavey, Phillip Crispell, Jake Ewart, Peyton Fulmer, Samir Katta, Hunter Koele and Tyler Russo. Coaches are Dan DelMonte, Rick Russo, John Roschella and Craig Crispell.

BASKETBALL

The Columbia Ravens 16U basketball team won the Big Shots Myrtle Beach Live 2 Tournament in mid-July. They finished 8-1 overall. Members of the team include Brandon Dix (Long Reach), Brandon Prox (Mt. Hebron), Ojie Okojie (River Hill), Connor Marshall (Atholton), John Marshall (Gonzaga), Dubem Nnake (Loyola Blakefield), Dayne Koontz (Manchester Valley) and Brendan Fox (Loyola Blakefield).

JUMP ROPE

Twenty-two members of the Kangaroo Kids Competition Team traveled to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the USA Jump Rope National Championship June 28 to July 1 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The event featured over 560 jumpers from 42 different teams.

Eleven members of the Kangaroo Kids team qualified to compete in the Grand National Championship in one or more events by having a top-12 score across all age groups in a speed or freestyle event, or by placing first in their age division freestyle event. For the Grand National Championship, Kangaroo Kids were represented eight times on stage for speed events and 10 times for freestyle events. The jumpers that qualified in speed events were Christina Kratzmeier, Jenna Meek, Beth Short, Cameron Simmons, Sophie Skalny and Aaron Weingrad. Jumpers who qualified in freestyle events were Emily Gates, Christina Kratzmeier, Michael Laper, Devin Meek, Jenna Meek, Drew Meininger, Cameron Simmons, Sophie Skalny, Lily Trossman and Aaron Weingrad. Devin Meek and Drew Meininger placed second in pairs freestyle, while the team of Meek, Meininger, Simmons and Weingrad placed second in Double Dutch pairs freestyle. Simmons also placed second overall in the male senior division, while Kangaroo Kids placed third as the overall freestyle team and first in the small team show category. Jumping in team show were Amy Augustino, Maria Ciarrocchi, Kacie Costello, Emily Gates, Christina Kratzmeier, Michael Laper, Devin Meek, Jenna Meek, Drew Meininger, Sophie Skalny, Lily Trossman and Aaron Weingrad.

BASEBALL

The 220th consecutive monthly meeting of "Talkin' Baseball" will take place on August 5 at 9 a.m. at Brighton Gardens, 7110 Minstrel Way, Columbia, MD. Speakers include Fran Zimniuch, who will discuss his book, "Philadelphia Phillies: Where have you gone?"

The American Legion Columbia Post 300 Patriots Baseball Team will hold tryouts for the 2018 summer season on the following dates and times at the listed field locations: Thursday, July 27 at 6 p.m. at Hammond High School; Thursday, August 3 at 6 p.m. at Atholton High School; Saturday, August 5 at 11 a.m. at Hammond High School.

Columbia Post 300 Patriots qualified for the state playoffs in 2016 and finished as runners up. Players are expected to attend all tryouts, if possible. SOCCER

Soccer Association of Columbia is now registering players for the fall 2017/spring 2018 seasons for the Clinic, Recreation and High School Programs. The leagues are open to players with birth years from 1999 to 2013. Teams meet for eight weeks each season for practices and weekend games.

SAC is now registering players for SAC Training Academy Summer Camps scheduled throughout the month of August. Players of all abilities, ages 5 to 14 years old can take part in SAC's professionally run summer camp. Both full and half-day sessions are offered. SAC also offers extended care 4-6 p.m. for an additional fee.

The SAC Juniors Program is a fun-filled introduction to soccer. SAC offers six, one-hour weekday or weekend sessions for ages 3-4 throughout the year in Howard County. Players receive an Under Armour jersey. Topics include body awareness, agility, balance and ball control.
