Rec Sports: Warhawks Field Hockey wins gold at National Indoor Championships

The Howard County Warhawks U14 field hockey squad poses for a photo after winning gold at the USA Field Hockey National Indoor Championships.

The Howard County Warhawks Field Hockey Club’s U14 team won a gold medal at this week’s USA Field Hockey National Indoor Championship, defeating teams from four states along the way.

This marks the second straight National Indoor gold medal for this group.

Glenelg High School field hockey coaches Nicole Trunzo and Courtney Abell coach the team, which is a partner club of Howard County. Team members include: Avery Hayden, Hala Silverstein, AJ Eyre, Kamryn Henson, Riley Oakes, Teresa Stiller, Megan Frank, Sarah Mudd, Audrey Mullen and Natalie Machiran.

The Warhawks Field Hockey Club will host the U16 R7 USA Field Hockey Championship over Memorial Day weekend at the Troy Park fields in Elkridge.

Running

There were 76 runners that came out Sunday, Jan. 28 for the Howard County Striders weekly series race at Longfellow Elementary School. Brian Shadrick and Kiley Mann were the two-mile winners. Michael Thielman and Kendra Smith paced the 10k runners.

Volleyball

The Maryland Juniors Volleyball Club in Jessup is hosting Spring Volleyball Clinics for the ages of 12 through 16 for both girls and boys March 19-May 24. The clinics run for 10 weeks and there are 20 sessions. The fee is $300.

The 12-under (9-11 years old) group is from 6-8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesday; 14-under (12-13) is from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; 16-under (14-15) is from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Soccer

Soccer Association of Columbia is now registering players for School’s Out Holiday Clinics. Sessions from 9-12, 1-4 and 9-4 are available.

The SAC Junior Tots is a fun-filled introduction to Soccer, SAC offers six, one-hour weekday or weekend sessions for ages 3-4 throughout the year in Howard County. Players receive an Under Armour jersey. Topics include body awareness, agility, balance and ball control.

Soccer Association of Columbia is now registering players for the Spring 2018 Junior Academy season. The league is open to players with birth years 2012 and 2013. Gender based teams meet for eight weeks on Saturday mornings and focus on skills, teamwork and the basics of soccer beginning in April. Players receive an Under Armour jersey and socks.

Soccer Association of Columbia is now registering players for the Spring 2018 Recreation season. The league is open to players from ages 6 to 14. Teams meet for eight weeks for practices and weekend games beginning in April. Players receive an Under Armour jersey, shorts and socks.
