Behind Nguyen, Atholton boys golf opens season with win over Reservoir

With junior Branden Nguyen leading the way, Atholton opened the season in style on Thursday with a convincing victory over Reservoir at Fairway Hills Golf Course.

Nguyen tied a career high with an even-par round of 27 points and that set the stage for the Raiders’ to knock off the Gators 64-43. Ben Dotson also contributed a strong round of 17 points in the win.

Myles Robinson (12 points) and Justin Silverstein (8) rounded out the scoring for an Atholton team that starts 1-0 after going 6-5 last fall.

In the loss, Trace Teodori (17 points) and Justin Gutierrez (15) were the leaders for Reservoir.

Kevin Hickey tied a River Hill program record with a one-under-par round of 28 points, spearheading a lopsided victory for the Hawks on opening day at Hobbit’s Glenn.

Hickey, whose previous career high was 27 points last fall, tied the record held by Derek Gold that he set in 2016.

In addition to Hickey, River Hill also got 19 points apiece from Cam Deiuliis and Jackson Graves to help provide separation from an Oakland Mills team that was led by 21 points from Adam Fairbanks.

Centennial 74, Hammond 29

Senior Kenneth Chaplain scored a team-high 23 points and Ty Sams was right behind him with 21 in the Eagles’ victory over the Golden Bears.

Brennan Olds (17 points) and Ryan Jung (16) paced the scoring for a Vikings’ team that edged the Wildecats in the closest Howard County golf match of the day. Eric Schneider (16 points) and Hari Badesha (15) were the top scorers for Wilde Lake.

Kate Abunassar led the way with 16 points for a Gators’ squad that already eclipsed its best total as a team from the 2017 season.

Adrienne Lesho scored a team-high 17 points for the Hawks in their season opener.

The Eagles posted the top team total among the girls teams on opening day, getting a team-high 17 points from Morgan Taylor. For Taylor, a junior, it was a career high.

Joanna Park (15 points) and Katie Cody (14) were right behind her for Centennial.

A balanced scoring effort was just enough for the Vikings to start the season with a win. Wilde Lake’s Clare Bowen scored a match-high 7 points, including a par on the seventh hole at Willow Springs.
