Long Reach pulled off another playoff upset Thursday.
The fifth-seeded Lightning took fourth-seeded Mt. Hebron in to penalty kicks and defeated the Vikings, 4-2, to move on to the second round of the 3A playoffs for a second-straight year.
"I knew we were ready for it," said Long Reach junior Busi Sokoya. "We were hungry. The bus [ride here] every one was anxious. We wanted to play. We wanted a dub and we got it."
The result mirrored last season's outcome, where the lower-seeded Lightning knocked off Mt. Hebron at home in penalties. Long Reach went on to ruin Atholton's playoff aspirations in the following matchup and hopes to do it again this year, as it takes on the Raiders Nov. 1.
"It really just comes down to these girls, from the beginning, with all the injuries, they just refused and I did not allow them to make any excuses," said Long Reach coach Sam Haddad. "I said we are still going to play hard. Playoffs is another season for us and just like last year we're going back to Atholton."
The Lightning had only won two games heading in to the postseason contest against the Vikings, but one of their victories – which came just one week ago – was against Mt. Hebron in double overtime. So when regulation ended tied at one, Haddad and his group remained confident.
"It really comes from these girls," he said. "They just believe no matter how down they are they still play hard until the whistle. Being in overtime so many times this year kind of helped us, because we were kind of used to it. I had a feeling it was going to come down to this, [so] we practiced all week on PK's and they just executed perfectly, all five PK takers were just great."
Long Reach started the game fast and although it recorded just four shots on Vikings goalkeeper Megan Pallozzi (four saves) in the first half, the Lightning put the senior keeper to work, forcing her to eat up numerous loose passes played through and over the top of the defense, which landed inside the 18-yard box.
