The Howard Community College cross country team competed in the 33rd annual Greensboro Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The field consisted of NCAA Division I, II and III teams, with the Dragons competing in the DIII division where they placed second.
Marriotts Ridge alumna Abbey Starks was the highest placing finisher for the women, coming in third overall with a time of 19 minutes, 39 seconds in the 5k race. Starks was followed by Wilde Lake graduate Brenda Rosas (32nd overall, 22:23), Oakland Mills graduates Amani Jones (41st, 22:48), Brittany Nixon (77th, 26:41) and Century graduate Kirsten Murill (86th, 27:20).
Along with the top-three finish, Starks was also named the NJCAA DIII runner of the week.
The men were led by Springbrook alum Corey Young, who placed 23rd overall with a time of 29 minutes, 26 seconds. Ryan Clocker wasn't too far behind young (29th, 29:53), with Mt. Hebron graduate Abraham Samuel (32nd, 30:01), Glenelg graduate Garrett Birsa (33rd, 30:03) and Scott Camp (48th, 31:29) following.
"This was a very good meet," said HCC coach Steve Musselman. "It is a great, challenging course with some good competition."
The Howard Community College cross country team will travel to Lehigh University on Saturday, Oct. 1 to compete in the Paul Short Invitational.
