Glenelg boys, girls golf sweep Hammond to stay undefeated

On a warm afternoon Thursday at Cattail Creek, Glenelg’s boys and girls golf programs continued their relatively hot starts this fall.

The boys team, led by sophomore Caleb Taylor’s 20 points, cruised to a 55-22 victory over Hammond. The Gladiators’ girls, meanwhile, took advantage of a 16-point day from Alex Stone to defeat the Golden Bears 28-13.

Both Glenelg squads improved to 2-0 on the young season.

Excessive heat over the past week has postponed several county matches, including a tri-match involving the Gladiators, Marriotts Ridge and Oakland Mills that has since been rescheduled for Sept. 12 at Cattail Creek. That meant that Thursday’s match was the first for Glenelg since Aug. 23.

In the end, both the boys and girls weren’t affected much by the layoff and built on their season-opening victories over Long Reach.

Behind Taylor, Blake Corbi was the next best scorer for the Glenelg boys with 15 points. In the loss, Cal Hewitt scored a team-high 8 points for Hammond (0-4).

In the girls match, Stone was the only member of either team to score more than six points.
