Key players: Seniors Lydia Martin (CF) and Jen Wolinski (C); junior Alyssa Sandoval (2B/C); freshman Grace Edwards (P).
What you need to know: The Yellowjackets really found their stride toward the end of last season on the way to reaching the IAAM B Conference championship game for the second straight season. This year's group appears to be already building on that, having won each of its first three games this spring and scoring at least 10 runs in each contest.
Wolinski has been particularly impressive in the early going, according to coach John Isaac. "She is on fire at the plate … crushing everything," he said. "No 'seeing eye,' base hits, just ropes."
Isaac has also praised the poise in big spots thus far by freshman Edwards in the circle, who is taking over the big shoes left behind by one of the program's all-time greats in Bethanne Venkatesan.
Overall there are six returning starters — Wolinski, Martin, Melissa Lindueare, Tiffany Tharp, Amanda Rickett and Hyeji Cho — and that includes the team's entire starting outfield. Sandoval is a transfer into the program who has some versatility and will be an immediate contributor.
In terms of competition in the B Conference, St. Paul's is always one of the conference's powerhouse programs. Isaac also expects Maryvale to be extra motivated after losing to the Yellowjackets each of the last two years on their own field in the playoffs.
