It took waiting an extra couple weeks and holding off a strong challenge from Howard, but Centennial’s girls golf team finally put the finishing touches on the program’s first county championship since 2009 on Tuesday at Willow Springs.
In a tri-match against the Lions and Atholton to close out the regular season, the Eagles put up 44 points to complete a perfect 11-0 fall against county competition.
Senior Joanna Park and junior Morgan Taylor led the way with 16 points apiece, while sophomore Sussie Park rounded out the scoring with 12 points for a Centennial team that prevailed despite playing with only three players.
“The girls played well, today, especially being a little short handed with two of our players out sick,” Centennial coach Stephen Lee said. “Everyone did their part again, which really is indicative of our entire season. No one had to be a superstar, each of them just had to play their own game.”
Howard (7-4), which got 17 points apiece from Logan Lurie and Sophia Soh, certainly made the Eagles earn the victory. The Lions came into the season having won each of the previous four county championships and were in it until the last hole before falling just a little short.
Atholton (1-10), which also competed, finished with one point.
The tri-match between the schools had originally been scheduled for the last week in August, but three different postponements because of inclement weather led to it finally being played Tuesday. It is the final match of the season involving county teams, with only the state championship tournament yet to be played next week at the University of Maryland.
The undefeated season for Centennial builds on 10-1 campaigns in both 2016 and 2017.
