Boys basketball roundup: Long Reach, Marriotts Ridge beat league opponents

The last full week of the boys basketball regular season began with a pair of county games Monday night, with Long Reach and Marriotts Ridge each holding serve on their own floor.

Long Reach (3-11 county, 7-12 overall) — 67, Howard (1-13, 5-15) — 48

Following a six-game losing streak, Long Reach has now won back-to-back contests thanks to its blowout win against Howard on Monday night.

A 29-26 halftime lead for the Lightning ballooned to double digits in the third quarter and only increased from there. Craig Johnson led all scorers with 22 points, but three other Lightning players scored in double figures. Darrion Harris paced the visiting Lions with 17 points.

Marriotts Ridge (7-7, 11-8) — 71, Glenelg (3-11, 7-12) — 68

For three quarters Monday night, Marriotts Ridge looked to be on its way to a comfortable victory. The Mustangs scored at least 19 points in each period and were doing so in a variety of ways, and the result was a 61-45 advantage entering the final frame.

However, Glenelg dominated the last eight minutes. Johnny Piwowarski and Carson Dick, who each poured in a game-high 21 points, combined to score 18 points in the fourth quarter compared to the Mustangs’ 10.

It was not until the final moments that the Mustangs were able to hang on for the county victory and move back to .500 in league play.
