Gottwals' late goal lifts Atholton field hockey over Catonsville

Atholton, Centennial and Glenelg Country opened up their field hockey seasons with wins Tuesday.

Stephanie Gottwals was the catalyst for the Raiders, as her goal with 2.8 seconds left to play lifted Atholton past the Comets, 4-3, in a thriller.

The Raiders opened up the game with a 3-0 lead – then the game got exciting.

Catonsville scored twice before halftime to close the gap to one. Finally, the Comets tied it up with 17.8 seconds left when Kelsey Jones scored on a stroke.

"She did probably one of the most beautiful strokes I have ever seen," said Atholton coach Martie Dyer.

On the restart after the goal, the Raiders' Tori Raulin lifted the ball to Gottwals who dribbled down field past the defense and went one-on-one with the goalie to score the game-winner.

"It was an insane ending," Dyer said.

The game was the first of the season for Atholton. The team is back in action Wednesday at Arundel.
