Special Olympics Howard County hosts cross country meet

On Oct. 5, the Special Olympics Howard County cross country team hosted a home meet at Reservoir High School.

There were athletes on hand from Howard, Montgomery, Washington, Baltimore and Fairfax county to compete in 5k, 2k and 800-meter competitions.

Trip Logue (18) from Howard County led the pack of 5k runners, and Will Frisinger (15), also from Howard County, blazed the 2k distance to win in 10 minutes, 29 seconds.

Jordan Scardinia and Zach Calhoun (both from Washington County) led the 800-meter event in 4:50 and 4:59, respectively.

The excitement of the day was topped with a 4x400-meter relay, marking the first event of its kind in Special Olympics Howard County. The winning relay team from Howard County yielded a time of 5:25.

5k: 1. Trip Logue, 21:08; 2. Julian Than, 22:14; 3. Nicholas Howard, 22:15; 4. Mark Worley, 22:43; 5. Bruce Worley, 22:49; 8. Griffin Gundersen, 26:30.

2k: 1. Will Frisinger, 10:29; 4. Jesse Carrico, 12:35; 7. Sam Carder, 13:26; 9. Calvin Racette, 14:48; 11. Marcus Lesho, 16:43; 12. Jackson Cruz, 17:06.

800: 3. Jack Anderson, 5:20; 10. Matthew Taylor, 9:11.

Running

There were 36 runners that came out for the Howard County Striders third weekly series race at Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center. Lola Jemibewon and Roger Calvert were the two-mile winners. Luis Navarro and Marsha Demaree paced the 10k runners, while Mark Eagles and Faye Weaver led the way in the 15k race.

Top finishers:

2-mile: 1. Lola Jemibewon, 18:06; 2. Roger Calvert, 18:12; 3. Lauren Loeffler, 18:15; 4. Karen Harvey, 18:28; 5. Denzel Chin, 20:03.

10k: 1. Luis Navarro, 41:44; 2. Steve Knoll, 45:19; 3. Eric Johnston, 48:12; 4. Kirk Gordon, 50:00; 5. Jeff Vohn, 50:10.

15k: 1. Mark Eagles, 1:01:48; 2. Sean Costello, 1:05:31; 3. Bromley Lowe, 1:13:50; 4. Alan Mulindwa, 1:14:33; 5. Faye Weaver, 1:21:06.

Soccer

The Maryland United FC girls U10 soccer team won the championship for their division/bracket at the Discovery Cup Tournament. Team members are Bella Tan, Jane Williams, Claire McGarvey, Evelyn Dzubak, Chloe McGarvey, Amy Ingram, Amari Mehta, Jaeden Anderson, Sabba Haghgoo, Zoee Stencil and Megan Maloney.
