New traffic signal along Route 1 in Elkridge to begin operating Nov. 19

A new traffic signal on Route 1 at Port Capital Drive will begin operation Tuesday morning, according to Maryland State Highway Administration officials.

The signal will operate in a continuous "flash" mode for 72 hours to warn drivers of the new traffic pattern. Full-color operation will begin Friday, Nov. 22. Electronic signs have been placed along Route 1 to alert motorists to the impending change in traffic pattern.

SHA installed the signal in response to increasing traffic at the intersection, located between Waterloo and Montevideo Roads in Elkridge. According to the administration, the average daily traffic on Route 1 in the area is more than 27,000 vehicles a day.

The new signal cost about $108,000.
