Mt. Hebron entered Thursday's tri-meet with Oakland Mills and Wilde Lake confident riding a 4-0 record and anxious to get back on the mat after a 21-day layoff.
The Vikings knew they had a target on their back and that Oakland Mills was going to present a serious challenge, but what they got was a large serving of "humble pie" in a 55-9 defeat where Mt. Hebron only won two matches.
"I think now we're humbled. We ate some humble pie and I think we kind of realized we were undefeated coming in," Vikings coach Todd DeCrispino said. "Now we know, hey, maybe we still need some work."
Four of the first six matches ended in close decisions, but Oakland Mills (13-2) won each of them at 138, 152, 170 and 182 to take a 22-0 lead.
The Vikings usual 160-pounder, third-place state finisher Connor Strunk who is ranked fourth overall by the Maryland State Wrestling Association, tweaked his surgically repaired shoulder in his first match against Wilde Lake's Ernie Fermin and had to sit out the match against the Scorpions.
"Nothing in the middle weights from 145 up to 182 fell our way. Everything that was a close match went their direction," DeCrispino said. "We've been really trying the last week and half to tell them how tough this team is. Not to mention we beat them the last two years, they were gunning for us."
Oakland Mills heavyweight Antonio Rozier, who beat last year's county champion River Hill's Tyler Smith earlier this season, continued his unexpected tear through the weight class with a 7-2 win over Nick Suri, who placed fourth at the county tournament last season. The win gave the Scorpions a 37-0 lead.
Rozier was the JV county champion last season at heavyweight, but after wrestling all summer long and putting in the work, he beat out the returning varsity heavyweight for the spot and has been one of the biggest surprises of the county so far.
"The work, it was ridiculous. It's not just me, it's my team as a whole," Rozier said. "Everyday in the practice room, even before practice, we just put in work nonstop. If you were looking for any of us, you could just say find us on the mat because that's where we always were, either in the weight room or on the mat just putting in hard work. ... I have the least experience of anyone on the team. I guess I was born to wrestle."
Oakland Mills continued its run, building a 55-0 lead and winning the first 12 matches. Only when the Hayden brothers stepped on the mat did Mt. Hebron get on the scoreboard.
Sophomore Jimmy Hayden overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Julian Capino 6-2 at 126 pounds, and senior Jeff Hayden received a forfeit.
Although Jeff Hayden didn't get a chance to wrestle, DeCrispino thinks he has the chance to do something no other wrestler in school history has ever done. Although the team won the state dual title in 2002, no individual wrestler has ever won a state championship for the Vikings.
"I expect Jeff to be the first state champ, I really do. He's a two-time runner up, and I think he's definitely got a good shot," DeCrispino said. "I think Jeff is firing on all cylinders right now. He's really working hard."
The loss is the first of the season for Mt. Hebron (5-1), but DeCrispino is confident his team lost to the clear-cut county champions.
"I think they will definitely be county champs. I don't see anybody in the county beating them," DeCrispino said. "They're in a really good region and I think they could possibly be regional champs. ... They got a really solid lineup."
The Vikings will host the District V Duals Friday and Saturday. They won the event last year with a perfect 7-0 record and are aiming to win it again against some tough Anne Arundel county competition.
The Scorpions will travel to Delaware for a tournament Friday and Saturday at Smyrna High School, the two-time defending Delaware state champions. For coach Brad Howell, it will be a family reunion or sorts.
Smyrna's coach is Howell's middle brother, Curt Howell, while his nephew, Ryan Howell, is bringing his team from Newark, De., as well.
"I'll see a little family, it will be fun. I'm looking forward to that," Howell said.
As for the competition, it will be their toughest yet.
"My guys can't wait," he said. "It will be tough."
