Despite dealing with injuries and general soreness after battling Mt. Hebron and Reservoir to two tight duals on Tuesday, Marriotts Ridge won six of the eight matches wrestled to beat visiting Howard 61-12 Thursday.
Unfortunately for both teams, the injuries and sickness forced some of the top wrestlers from each team to sit out.
"It was a good match. I don't think it was a fair estimate of either team," said Marriotts Ridge coach Jason Conley. "I know two of their better wrestlers were sitting in the bleachers. I had five wrestlers out of the lineup. ... We need the winter break."
Howard was forced to forfeit the three matches to start the dual (106, 113 and 120) in addition to the final three (182, 220 and heavyweight), but several Mustangs battled in close matches and earned hard fought decisions.
"Tonight I thought the kids might lay a golden egg, but the kids rallied," Conley said. "I bumped my entire lineup up from 152 on up. They all stood up to it so that was good for us."
At 145 pounds, Marriotts Ridge's Thomas Olsen needed just a reversal in the second period to pull out a 2-0 win over Dominic Umstott.
Omar Delen earned a first period take down and an escape to beat Daniel Lee 3-0 at 170 pounds, and Michael Hurd pulled out a last second 3-2 win by escaping to break a 2-2 tie with Ben Massey.
Ramtin Habibi built a solid lead before pinning the Lion's Kyle Williams at 126 pounds, and Will Parks beat Jacob Kohen 13-1 at 132 pounds. Sam Deitemyer (160) only needed 34 seconds to pin Joe Keagle.
"We're solid. We got a nice group of kids, but we got a few holes because of injury," Conley said.
Conley said he was glad his team didn't have a letdown after beating Reservoir 36-30 on Tuesday. Instead, the Mustangs "were pretty pumped" because of beating the Gators and used that as motivation to dominate Thursday.
For Howard, Allan Mathew controlled the match before pinning Marriotts Ridge 138 pounder Will Barker, and Bryan Crumback, perhaps the Lions best wrestler, pinned Cody Kues at 152 pounds.
The Lions have also been hounded with injuries and sickness, as Darian Kassiri (120), a county finalist from last season, Nick Williams (126) and Jake Billings (220) were all missing from the lineup.

After beating three-time defending county dual champions River Hill on Tuesday, Oakland Mills continued its tear through the top tier of the county by dominating host Reservoir 51-20 Thursday.
"Oakland Mills is really, really good. They don't have a weak weight," said Gators coach Andy McIntyre. "They just don't have any holes. They are solid top to bottom. ... They're definitely one of the best dual teams in the state and come tournament time they're going to be there right at the top of the podium."
But Scorpions coach Brad Howell was disappointed in how his team wrestled from the bottom position and thought that cost some of his wrestlers chances to win close matches.
One of those matches was at 113 pounds, where Oakland Mills freshman Kyle Farace, two days after pinning county champion Matt Shealy in the first period, fell to Reservoir junior Dalton Kleinhen, 6-2.
"Dalton has been putting in the work in the offseason and we had a game plan," McIntyre said. "I don't think we even had our best match against him."
Kleinhen was around a .500 wrestler on his first year of varsity last season, but decided to put in the work in the offseason at Oakland Mill's offseason program Orange Crush – which is run by Howell – to prepare for a breakout season.
"It felt good" to beat Farace, Kleinhen said. "I'm looking forward to the rest of the season and getting better."
The county looks to be wide open at 113 pounds this season. Kleinhen lost to Marriotts Ridge's Chris Spano on Tuesday in a close match that Kleinhen was leading going into the third period.
At 132 pounds, Reservoir senior Troy Kilcarr beat Scorpions sophomore Dakota Thompson 3-0 in a tight matchup of two top county wrestlers, and the Gator's Shawn Hamilton beat Oakland Mills' Zach Vincent, who placed fifth in the state last season, 5-4 at 220 pounds.
