Marriotts Ridge wrestling knocks off Howard, 50-17

Continuing its strong start to the 2013-2014 season, Marriotts Ridge (2-2) routed Howard (2-1), 50-17, Thursday night.

The Mustangs have only lost to undefeated powers Reservoir and River Hill, both in close matches.

"Marriotts Ridge is going to have a great season this year," Reservoir coach Andrew McIntyre said after his team's 39-31 win over the Mustangs on Tuesday night. "I knew they were going to be better than they've been the last couple of years ... they don't have any quitters on the team, they're just tough kids."

On Thursday night, Kyle Wiggins (113), Will Parks (126), Zach Moody (132), Michael Bernal (170) and Scott Desautelle (220) scored pins to lead the Mustangs.

The match featured a showdown between two of the best freshmen lightweights in the state, as Howard's Darian Kassiri defeated previously unbeaten Chris Spano, 11-4, at 106.

In other matches between top wrestlers, Howard's Bryan Crumback (145) defeated Marriotts Ridge's Andrew Blalock, 17-7, and Marriotts Ridge's Omar Delen (152) edged Howard's Colin Hawes, 3-1.

Nicholas Williams (120) scored the Lions' only pin.
