Lacrosse is a spring sport, but that fact was belied by the blankets and layers of clothing used for extra warmth during Saturday's spring tournament games.
The odd snowflake drifted from the sky past players, coaches and fans bundled up against the bitter cold and wind.
"It was freezing cold. The girls couldn't even feel their hands," said Marriotts Ridge coach Amanda Brady, whose team won its own tournament with a pair of close victories.
Mt. Hebron (Fight for Five) and Howard (Karl Wolf) also won their tournaments.
Mustang Tournament
Marriotts Ridge had to rally from a halftime deficit to win both of its games.
In their opener, the Mustangs beat Severn, an IAAM School, 13-12, in overtime.
Lily Kennedy (four) and Caroline Blalock (three) led the Mustangs' scoring. Keeper Caroline Moore made a big save late in the contest.
Marriotts Ridge junior attack Carly Miller injured her knee in the game. The severity of her injury has yet to be determined.
Caroline Blalock had the game-winning goal in a 9-8 victory over Catonsville. The Mustangs trailed, 7-1, and struggled at the midfield by not coming up with the draw and getting beat in transition.
At halftime, Brady told her team, "We've got to go out with intensity and fire. Dig deep and find it. [Get] the ball and put it in the back of the net and that's what they did."
Moving Sarah Blalock to center for the draw worked well in the second half.
Brady said her team stayed "extremely positive" and the players can pick themselves up.
"I think team unity at the end of the day is what kept us together," she said.
The teams' records were: Marriotts Ridge, 2-0; Severn and Century, 1-1; and Catonsville, 0-2.

Fight For Five (at Cedar Lane Park)
Mt. Hebron won its own tournament after two years of finishing as runner-up. The Vikings had to pull away from a 6-6 tie early in the second half to defeat Mount de Sales, 7-6. Senior Jen Giles scored the tournament-winning goal, and defender Meghan Doherty was a standout.
"She was truly the star of the game with six caused turnovers, five ground balls and four draw controls," coach Trish Derwart said of Doherty.
Mt. Hebron played a solid first half against a very balanced Mount de Sales team, but lost its edge just after halftime when the Sailors tied the score.
"Meghan stepped up with critical caused turnovers that allowed us to keep possession, and Jen Giles' goal sealed the game," Derwart said.
The Vikings' effort was hampered by 10 uncontested turnovers.

Karl Wolf Tournament (at Rockburn Branch Park)
After twice losing close games to Worcester Prep in the Karl Wolf championship game, Howard rewrote the tournament ending this year with a 17-7 victory.
"I thought my team played really well today," said Howard coach Alleesha Davidson.
After jumping out to a 6-0 lead early in the game, Howard lost its intensity and Worcester Prep dug into the Lions' lead. Howard, however. dominated in the second half to notch the victory.
Kendall Wells led the way with five goals. She received the Karl Wolf Award for her team, as did Michelle Armstrong (Reservoir), Taylor Baird (Wilde Lake) and Molly Soule (Worcester Prep).
In the second game, Baird played goalie in place of regular keeper Jenna Oler, who jammed her thumb in the Wildecats' first game against Howard. Baird usually plays attack.
"Taylor did a nice job in a difficult situation," said Wilde Lake coach Sean McHale.
