Glenelg overcame a slow start — and Atholton — Tuesday afternoon. The Gladiators pulled away from a 4-4 tie to win, 18-9.

Hannah Doughty, Alayna Pagnotta and Anna Callahan had a hand in the last 11 goals that Glenelg scored.

Doughty led Glenelg with five goals. Pagnotta had four and Callahan, a freshman, had three.

The trio combined for four of Glenelg's five assists in the game.

"Our main focus this year is definitely assists," Doughty said. "Most of our players can catch very well" near the goal circle.

"Overall, we are starting to find our rhythm," said Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid. "I'm really proud of how far the offense has come."

The two teams traded goals for the first 15 minutes of the game. But it was Glenelg that found an extra gear the rest of the way.

Draw possession was a key to the game, and Gladiator freshman Peighton Stone gave her team an advantage there.

Although Meaghan Quinn had three goals and Rachel Foster, KK Shepherd and Emma Johnson all scored twice, it wasn't enough as Atholton lost its second game in row.

"We do our game plan and then something happens and I'm not sure why. We are trying it out," said Atholton coach Martie Dyer. "Some of the basics weren't there like they needed to be.

"Our biggest problem was we got called for fouling in the 8 [meter area] way too many times. They had probably eight goals on free positions and that killed us. It's frustrating. We've got to move our feet and not go for the check in there."
