Glenelg goalie Megan Taylor remembers playing on the Mt. Hebron field as a freshman. Her team lost by single goal in overtime.
Taylor, now a senior, has a better memory to remember now after Glenelg defeated Mt. Hebron, 8-7, Friday afternoon in a Class 3A/2A South Region Section I semifinal.
Mt. Hebron had a chance to send the game into overtime. There was no visible time on the clock when Glenelg was called for a foul and Jordan Stevens was set up for an 8-meter free position.
Because there was no time on the clock, Taylor asked the official when the play would be over.
She said she was told one shot and no passes.
"I knew right there that since the defense was around me if I got the angles right if anything there was going to be a deflection. So I just stood big. It was a good shot and luckily I got it," Taylor said. "She's an awesome player; they are an awesome team."
"We had our opportunities and we came back in the end but it wasn't enough," said Mt. Hebron coach Trish Derwart.
Mt. Hebron, the county champion, had a 3-2 halftime advantage. Glenelg tied the score early in the second half only to see Mt. Hebron pull in front, 5-4.
When Mt. Hebron senior Chachi Kelehan received a yellow card and was sent to the sideline for two minutes, Glenelg turned the game around.
The Gladiators got a pair of goals from Courtney Renehan and one from Hannah Doughty to pull in front 6-5.
"They took full advantage of a man down situation, and that's when the momentum swung in their favor," Mt. Hebron coach Trish Derwart said.
Doughty's fifth goal of the game put the Gladiators up, 7-5. Renehan finished with three goals.
Doughty was shut out when the two teams played in the regular season, and that dismal performance has haunted her.
"I've spent weeks and weeks watching film and watching myself. Even last night I was up late when I should have been asleep. I was analyzing everything we could have done better," she said.
The Gladiators, who have only defeated Mt. Hebron three other times in history, definitely executed their well-constructed game plan.
Glenelg was good on the draw and quick to get ground balls. After a rocky start, the team valued their possessions offensively and played a solid defense. Also, they didn't seem to get rattled when Mt. Hebron made good plays.
"We definitely executed today," Renehan said.
"We had our opportunities," Derwart said. "I think we hurt ourselves a lot today. I think we are more than what we showed. Unfortunately, you have those 50 minutes and that's it."
Glenelg won't have long to savor its win.
"We will take a second to take a deep breath and enjoy it, but we've got our work cut out for us," Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid said.
