Atholton, Glenelg and Marriotts Ridge stay atop field hockey standings

A three-way tie remains for the county title as Atholton, Marriotts Ridge and Glenelg all won their games Tuesday afternoon.

Marriotts Ridge had the closest call, beating Centennial, 1-0. Allie McAuley scored the only goal of the game with an assist from Maddie Courtney.


Centennial keeper Anna Cosentino turned aside seven Marriotts Ridge shots.

Atholton 5, River Hill 1

River Hill shocked Atholton when Erin Barker scored 33 seconds into the game, but the Raiders rebounded with five unanswered goals, four of which were assisted.

"We just watched them take the ball to the goal," said Atholton coach Martie Dyer of the early score against her team.

Gina D'Astro and Tori Raulin each had two goals for Atholton.

Atholton defender Ashley Martin showed her competitive spirit. She broke a tooth and cut her lip when she was hit in the mouth, but she insisted on going back into the game. Martin is one of four sophomores who start for the Raiders. There is also a freshman starter (Raulin).

Bridget Cavanaugh scored the game winner in overtime as Wilde Lake edged Oakland Mills, 3-2. It was Cavanaugh's second goal of the game.

Olivia Eldridge and Maggie Zuelsdorf scored for Oakland Mills, which is still looking for it first county victory of the season.

Mt. Hebron 4, Howard 1

A pair of goals by Ally Unkenholz put Mt. Hebron well on its way to a 3-0 halftime advantage over Howard that eventually led the Vikings to victory.

"We had a horrible first half," said Howard coach Kristen Vance. "We were beating ourselves."

Vance made a halftime adjustment, moving an extra player to the forward line for more punch on offense. The Lions played a better second half and scored on a corner play.

Defense and midfield play has been the hallmark of Glenelg Country School's team this year and Tuesday's game against John Carroll was no exception. Senior Koko Etokebe led the defense while sophomore Tokunbo Olaniyan was a standout in midfield.

Goalie Sophia Kalaris had 12 saves for the Dragons.

The Dragons won their first IAAM B Conference game of the year Oct. 2, with a 3-1 victory over Friends.

Glenelg Country School got on the board first when Gabi Hernandez tipped in a pass from Carmen Zheng. Friends evened up the score 4 minutes later scoring on an offensive penalty corner.

Glenelg Country sophomore Julia Sheehan missed most of the first half due to a hard ball to the ankle but she was able to get back in the game second half and put her team the lead scoring off a direct shot on an offensive penalty corner. The assist came from inserter Erin Jack.

Hernandez scored her second goal of the game off a loose ball in front of the cage to seal the victory.
