Howard schools closed Monday because of weather

The Howard County Public School System announced at 5:30 a.m. that all schools will be closed Monday.

All evening activities in the schools, both school- and community-sponsored, have been canceled. That includes any athletic practices and games.


This is the second day in a row the school system has canceled activities and programs because of the weather.

In addition to HCPSS's closings, Howard Community College announced that it will open at 10 a.m.


All branches of the Howard County Library system will open at noon Monday.

The Howard County Government announced that its liberal leave policy is in effect.

The Howard County Arts Council announced its Center for the Arts is closed, although a re-evalution will be made at 3 p.m. for a possible 5 p.m. opening.

Trash, recycling and yard trim collection will occur today, officials said, although it might run behind schedule.

The Maryland State Highway Administration urged motorists to drive carefully during their commute.

SHA officials said icy conditions were possible through the morning rush hour.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the county that will remain in effect until 10 a.m. NWS warned of freezing rain and drizzle, with accumulations of about a quarter inch of ice, particularly at higher elevations.


According to Howard County police, there were approximately eight car accidents overnight and this morning in the county. None resulted in injuries.
