Howard Co. Police museum to open in Ellicott City

A museum dedicated to the history of law enforcement in Howard County is scheduled to open on Main Street in Historic Ellicott City by the end of this year.

Construction on the project is under way, and the expected cost of the museum is $120,000, according to a Howard County police news release. Funding for the project will come through donations and sponsorships.

The first phase was funded by donations from the Howard County Police Foundation, Supervisors' Alliance and Retired Officers Association. The foundation is seeking outside donations for the second phase.

“We want to pay tribute to the men and women who have paved the way for our current successes,” Police Foundation President Pete Newman said in a statement. “We want our community to better understand the dedication and contributions of our officers and the important role law enforcement has played in Howard County’s history. We also want to give residents a place to share with our agency, as partnerships with the community have been the cornerstone of our public safety efforts.”

The foundation and the police department, which are working together on the project, are also seeking artifacts or information about the agency's 60-year history.

"We are proud of the Howard County Police Department and the key role it is has played in this community," Police Chief William McMahon said in a statement. "We believe that preserving our past is an important part of protecting our future."
