Bookworm alert — Shepherd of the Glen slates annual book sale [West Friendship]

Lauren Bennett clears her weekend calendar at this time of year. The bibliophile who enjoyed a summer getaway to Italy this summer, admits to her book addiction.

Lauren has a bundle of empty book satchels just waiting to be filled during the annual Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church book sale, which is set for Sept 12-14 this year with hours on Sept 12 and 13, 3-7 p.m., and Sept. 14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Shepherd of the Glen is at 14551 Burntwoods Road. Chief book honcho Carol Kramer catalogues, organizes, collects and stores thousands of books each year in anticipation of this event, in its 18th year.

Proceeds from this, the largest used book sale in Howard County, benefit church mission programs.

If you missed the horse action at the Howard County Fair in August have no fear. Come out to the Howard County fairgrounds on Sept.8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to view some fabulous equestrian maneuvers. The Maryland Western Horse Association will host another show which is family friendly in every way.

Becky Novotny of West Friendship wants area folks to enjoy all the Western and English horse riding events that are available for local spectators. The show begins in the morning and continues through the afternoon with barrel events, speed classes, Western and English classes, cake walk, jumping events, pony ring sessions, young toddlers being led by their parents during lead line competitions and more.

All this horsing around takes place at the Howard County fairgrounds where there is plenty of free parking. Novotny notes that food is available and the event is great for spectators of all ages. Pony or horse owners are welcome to bring their animal for the varied competitions. The Maryland Western Horse Association exists to promote good sportsmanship and horsemanship among owners and exhibitors. Don't forget. There is always a need for non perishable items to fill the shelves at the Glenelg United Methodist Church food pantry. The food bank is open on the third Saturday of each month from 9 to 10 a.m.

The Kids Nearly New Sale will be in place at the Howard County fairgrounds in West Friendship on Sept. 7, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bargains galore including baby equipment, books and DVD's. scads of clothing and shoes and just about anything related to kids.
